California Dreamin’
Driving to California has always been on my list; especially in the early 70’ s when many of my generation felt the longing to go west. Of course life and work prevailed. I placed that desire on the back burner behind getting married, renovating homes, having my children, getting unmarried for awhile and then married again, starting anew and seeing the kids through early adulthood, saying sad goodbyes to family elders, finally becoming a grandparent and just recently retiring with my dear Dave from a business we both loved.
At last feeling like we have gotten through that confusing retirement adjustment period that we put off for so long and thinking that closing the business would be like the worst thing we could do; turns out retirement isn’t all that bad. You can wake up on a Tuesday and do what ever the hell you want! Pretty cool!
So what we are planning to do mid-February is pack up the little motor home and head south and then west to warmer weather. Hope to be gone about a month. The first real destination is Nashville and the Ryman-Grand Ole Opry theater. Not really country music fans but always wanted to experience the legendary venue. Have done the Beacon and MSG in NYC, Red Rocks in Denver, among others, and now the Ryman. We have tickets to see the Tedeschi Trucks band and that should be pretty good. We went to Nashville on the Blue Moon adventure and loved wandering in and out the bars and listening to great music. Will probably stop in the American Pickers Nashville store too.
The plan then is to keep heading south and west until we get into acceptable weather; do alot of sight seeing and sleep in Walmart parking lots and places where I don’t feel paranoid!! Poor Dave.
We need to be in LA on March 2 to leave for another National Geographic adventure tour. This time to Baja, Mexico, the Sea of Cortez and the Pacific to perhaps see the same whales we saw in Alaska a few years ago. They winter there and then head to Alaska in the summer. Love those Nat Geo trips!
I am blogging this little adventure so I can remember what we did! Dave will be doing all the driving because I don’t feel good about driving the motorhome. Pretty sure it would be easier to just drive a car and stay in motels but we want to give this motorhome thing a try. We have taken a few short trips in it but not a long journey like this one. It has to be easier than navigating up and down the east coast or down the Mississippi in a boat!
Looking forward to the trip but my foot seems to be stuck in it’s healing process. Dave insists that I ice it a couple times a day. Would prefer to apply heat but that is counterproductive. Doc said it would take months to heal. Guess he wasn’t kidding. Am at week 10 since the surgery and still hurts so that I am limping. Grrrrr!!! Patience is not a virtue of which I possess.
